Mrityunjay Mahadev Mandir is one of the most famous temples in the holy city of Varanasi. This temple has great historical and cultural importance in Hinduism. The smaller shrines within the temple are said to be thousands of years old. However the current building was constructed in 18th century, Mrityunjay Mahadev houses a Shivling and a well. Lord Shiva is worshiped as Mrityunjay Mahadev here, by devotees who perform Mrityunjay paath. It is also believed that Dhanvantari, Avatar of Vishnu and the god of Ayurvedic medicine, poured all his medicines in the well, giving it the healing power. It is believed that the temples keeps all its devotees away from unnatural death and cures illnesses when the devotees perform Mrityunjay paath and sprinkle water from the well on themselves.
Mahamrityunjay Mantra
The Rudra Mantra or Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is Great Death-conquering Mantra, also known as the Trayambakam Mantra. It is beneficial for mental, emotional and physical health and to be a moksha mantra which bestows longevity and immortality. This mantra is addressed to Shiva for warding off untimely death. It is also chanted while smearing Vibhuti over various parts of the Body and utilised in Japa or Homa (havan) to get desired results. While its energy protects and guides the initiates a mantra re-links consciousness to its deeper and more abiding nature and repetition of the mantra constitutes Japa, the practice of which develops concentration that leads to a transformation of awareness. The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is meant for healing rejuvenation and nurturance.
ॐ त्र्यं॑बकं यजामहे सु॒गन्धिं॑ पुष्टि॒वर्ध॑नम् ।
उ॒र्वा॒रु॒कमि॑व॒ बन्ध॑नान् मृ॒त्योर् मुक्षीय॒ माऽमृता॑त् ।
oṃ tryaṃbakaṃ yajāmahe sugandhiṃ puṣṭivardhanam
urvārukamiva bandhanān mṛtyor mukṣīya mā’mṛtāt
Materials required for Mahamrityunjaya Mantra are Cow milk, Ganga jal, sacred thread (Janeu), sugar, honey, ghee, curd, betel nuts, white cloth, datura, tulsi and bel leaves, sandalwood paste, bhang and rice. Other important items are – incense, flowers, lamps, roli, fruits and sweets etc. One also requires flowers like Swet pushp, Lal Vashtra, Kala til and Lal aasan. One should use Rudraksha mala for chanting Mahamrityunjaya Mantra. Devotees participating in the pooja should preferably wear new clothes.
- The best time to perform Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is early morning, services at Mrityunjay Mahadev Mandir is available from 4 am to 6 pm
- One ticket is valid for a person only
- You will get a phone call and mail after making payment and the actual time for performing rituals will be mutually deiced
- Your temple guide will pickup you from your place of stay in Varanasi city at the scheduled time fixed by you after booking and bring you to Mrityunjay Mahadev Mandir by local transport (E Rickshaw or Auto Rickshaw)
- Your temple guide will coordinate between you and priest performing ritual. Your priest will perform ritual inside the temple with you. It takes about 60 – 90 minutes to perform Mahamrityunjaya Jaap
- After Mahamrityunjaya Jaap your temple guide will bring you to other important temples nearby Mrityunjay Mahadev Temple – Lalita Gauri Temple, Vishalakshi Temple, Baba Kaal Bharav Temple and Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple and drop you back to your place of stay. Total time since pickup till drop will be 4 hours including travel time from your place of stay to temple and back
- Other religious rituals like Rudrabhishek in Mrityunjay Mahadev Temple or Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple can also be arranged if you ask after booking

- You need to carry your photo identity card in Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, mobile phones and camera are restricted inside the temple, you have deposit your phone and other belongings into the locker provided by Shri Kashi Vishwanath Mandir management before entering in the temple
